Baby Steps
It was back in Little Bend that I saw you
Light was changing on the water
Where birds above had flown
Thinking of a Place
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:1-2|KJV
Man’s descent to the water is needed in order to evoke the miracle of its coming to life. But the breath of the spirit rushing over the dark water is uncanny, like everything whose cause we do not know…This water is no figure of speech, but a living symbol of the dark psyche.
C.G. Jung
At the end which is at once the beginning, there is surely a darkness.
—How dark…though, is completely up to you now.
All truly creative acts have their roots buried deep within the [so-called] unconscious.
That the night is indeed darkest before the dawn of a new day.
That night and day are one.
That the light does indeed shine brighter, blindingly so, in the dark.
Great art till now has always derived its fruitfulness…from the unconscious process of symbolization which continues through the ages and, as the primordial manifestation of the human spirit, will continue to be the root of all creation in the future.
C.G. Jung
And so one mode of existent being ends, that another may at once begin.
The artist endures the struggle which unfailingly leads to the epiphany.
That chaos reigns, until it doesn’t.
The struggle is a necessary preamble to that which comes next: The Creation
We find this in everyday life, where dilemmas are sometimes solved by the most surprising new proportions; many artists, philosophers, and even scientists owe some of their best ideas to inspirations that appear suddenly from the unconscious. The ability to reach a rich vein of such material and to translate it effectively into philosophy, literature, music, or scientific discovery is one of the hallmarks of what is commonly called genius.
C.G. Jung
Grasp now that Man is The Artist, and Life his greatest work.
That the struggle of it all, leads to what is his defining moment.
Out of the darkness of a distant past, long before electricity, the animal of Man switched on a light.
That Man was this darkness, until he discovered his own shadow; a shadow made possible only through its equal opposite, light.
That one revelation begets The Other.
That if you ever make a great discovery, or birth a new creation, perhaps a glance over your shoulder in that moment may reveal an already prepared next step.
That Man today yet struggles and stumbles along on a vast quest begun by our ancient forbears.
That what began so long ago, still lingers as an echo resounding throughout the cosmos.
That Mankind is the ecstatic, religious experience of the cosmos itself.
That…something stirs to life deep within the dark abyss of this our very reality.
…out of this collision of opposites the unconscious psyche always creates a third thing of an irrational nature, which the conscious mind neither expects nor understands…a secret life holds sway in the unconscious…Since, however, the solution of the conflict through the union of opposites is of vital importance, and is moreover the very thing that the conscious mind is longing for, some inkling of the creative act, and of the significance of it, nevertheless gets through. From this comes the numinous character of the "child"…"Child" means something evolving towards independence…The "child" is born out of the womb of the unconscious…
C.G. Jung
That, as the Wise Man attains his wisdom from the burst of light within his own darkness, does The Cosmos gain its liberating wisdom from the spark within itself that is Man.
Once there was an explosion. A bang which gave birth to time and space. Once there was an explosion. A bang which set a planet spinning in that space. Once there was an explosion. A bang which gave rise to life as we know it. Once there was an explosion.
Death Stranding
The conquerors of darkness go far back into primeval times, and, together with many other legends, prove that there once existed a state of original psychic distress, namely unconsciousness. Hence in all probability the "irrational" fear which primitive man has of the dark even today.
C.G. Jung
That out of a dark cave did Man rise to greet the light in adoration, and the shadow in fear; for the shadow reminded Man of the darkness from which he struggled to be free; and the light led to all that we can now see.
That Man is the creation which creates.
That the dark must create light to know itself.
That without the light, dark exists not.
That with contrast does life begin.
That…without the darkness, there is no light.
Day and light are synonyms for consciousness, night and dark for the unconscious.
C.G. Jung
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day [consciousness/living], and the darkness he called Night [unconsciousness/death]. And the evening and the morning were [Life].
Genesis 1:3-5|KJV
I’m moving through the dark
Of a long black night
I’m looking at the moon
And the light it shines
But I’m thinking of a place
And it feels so very real
Oh, sufferer of love
